A Change of Age

Audio

Many prophets came in the previous ages. God gave each of them a miracle. The Quran says: "We sent Our messengers with evidence." (57:25). Here, 'evidence' means miracle. A miracle is something that makes a person speechless. The audience to whom such a miracle is shown used to have nothing to refute the prophet. When the Prophet Muhammad came to Makkah, it was the first quarter of the seventh century. The Prophet was last in the line of the prophets. He was not given any external miracle of the kind earlier prophets were given. Many people became opponents of the Prophet and created hurdles in his mission. So, the Prophet and his followers at that time requested for a miracle as the previous prophets had received. At this God said clearly that the Prophet would not be given a miracle: "Nothing has prevented Us from sending signs, except the fact that previous peoples denied them." (17:59). This means that the Final Messenger will not be given a miracle. But seeing the opposition from their people, the Prophet and his Companions used to hope for a miracle from God that would make the opponents speechless. Then a stern verse came down: "If you find their rejection hard to bear, then seek a tunnel into the ground or a ladder into the sky, if you can, and bring them a sign. Had God so willed, He would indeed have given them all [His] guidance. So do not be among the ignorant." (6:35). It is very clear from the Quran that the Prophet was not given a miracle. Some Muslims scholars could not understand the reason for this and have written books showing that the Prophet was indeed given miracles. These scholars have confused instances of God's help for the Prophet with miracles. God's help comes down for ordinary people as well and this is not a miracle. The Prophet once said that previous messengers were given miracles, but he was given the Quran. This means that the Quran is a book of guidance and also a miracle. The Prophet was not given any other miracle. This is because the coming of the Prophet marked the end of an age. Before the Prophet, the age of sword and violence had prevailed in the world, but after him there was a change: the age of peaceful ideology or the age of peace dawned. This is why a miracle was not needed, and the Quran, a book of ideology, sufficed as miracle.
