Prophet's Prayers during Fasting

Audio

The Prophet made special prayers during fasting. For example, at the time of breaking of the fast at dusk, the Prophet would pray: 'Praise be to God by whose help I was able to fast and who provided food so I could break the fast.' Another prayer of the Prophet at the time of breaking the fast is: 'O God, our fasting was for You. We broke our fast through the provision bestowed by You. So accept from us. You are all-hearing and all-knowing.' The Prophet would also say: 'O God, my fasting was for You and I broke my fast with the food provided by You.' At the time of breaking of the fast, the Prophet would call out to God in these words: 'Praise be to God! The thirst is quenched, nerves are refreshed and the reward is confirmed, if God wills.' These words of supplication help understand the spirit of fasting. They represent the feelings which arise in a believer when he is fasting. The believer remains hungry and thirsty throughout the day for the sake of God. When he breaks his fast in the evening and partakes of food and water, his heart is filled with special feelings for his Creator. These feelings are expressed in the above prayers of the Prophet.
