The goal of fasting is to develop in man the ability to lead his life bound by restrictions, rather than lead a totally unfettered life.

2. Significance of Fasting

There is much more to fasting than the caution and gratitude induced by the purely outward, physical forms of abstention. It’s greater significance lies in its symbolism of an inner, spiritual eagerness to make all kinds of sacrifices.

Fasting is an exercise in self-discipline. During the month of Ramadan, the believer abstains from food and drink in the daytime of his own free will. It is only after sunset that he satisfies his hunger and quenches his thirst. In this way, he builds up his self-control. By practicing restraint for one month in a year, he is able to lead a life of self-discipline in all matters for the rest of the year.

The aim of fasting during Ramadan is to diminish a person’s dependence on material things, so that he may elevate himself to a higher plane of devout living.
