The Message of Fasting

Maulana Wahiduddin Khan | Pillars of Islam | Spirit of Ramadan

The sighting of the moon on the last evening of the month of Shaban (the eighth month of the lunar calendar) marks the commencement of the month of fasting—Ramadan (the ninth month of the lunar calendar).

Fasting is a special training where one is being prepared to lead a principled life—not merely during the month of fasting, but, in fact, for the whole year round.

THE IDENTITY CRISIS

Maulana Wahiduddin Khan | Islam and Muslims | Al Risala, July 1988

In modern times Muslims have been faced with such situations as have forced them to think of all the things they have lost and, as a result, they have become a prey to a deprivation complex. It is important to understand what exactly it is that they have lost, since the normal human reaction in the face of loss is to begin the struggle for repossession.

A BURNING BRAND

Maulana Wahiduddin Khan | Islam in Life | Al-Risala, July 1988

The Prophet of Islam once said: “You bring your litigations before me–mortal human being that I am–and it may so happen that one of you puts his case better than the other, so that I decide the case in his favour, merely on the strength of what I have heard. But if I make a decision which means giving him that which is in truth his brother’s due, then what I have awarded him is a burning brand from the Fire.” (Musnad Ahmad, Hadith No. 26717)

ISLAMIC TEACHINGS ON ANGER

Maulana Wahiduddin Khan | Islam in Life | Al-Risala January 1988

Of all the human emotions, the most destructive is anger. It tears apart human relationships, shatters the harmony of the environment and can destabilize whole communities. As such, it must be recognised as one of the greatest negative forces in society and be kept under strict control.
