The Prophet of Islam once said, "God has a hundred mercies, and one of them He has sent down amongst men and animals, thereby they are kind unto one another, and thereby the wild creature inclines to tenderness unto her offspring. And ninety-nine mercies has God reserved unto Himself, that therewith He may show mercy unto His servants on the Day of Resurrection."

Why do people react so strongly to criticism? The reason is that criticism is taken as an insult. If they were to take criticism as a mere difference of opinion, their reaction would be less violent.

Once, two of the Prophet's companions, Abu Bakr and Umar, raised their voices in the presence of the Prophet. It happened that when a delegation of the Banu Tamim had come to Medinah, Abu Bakr said that Alqaqa should be made their leader, whereas Umar was of the view that Alaqra bin Habis was a better choice.
