Towards the end of his commentary on the chapter of the Quran entitled “The Night Journey”, IbnKathir has related the following incident: “A person heard the Prophet supplicating God by His names Rahman (the Beneficent) and Rahim (the Merciful). ‘I thought that he called on only one God,’ the man commented. ‘Yet, here he is, calling on two.’”

Recognise life’s opportunities

Someone has rightly said, “A day you have lived fully was your day. All other days are simply dates on your calendar.” There are two ways of leading your life. One is to simply pass your time, and the other is to avail of your time. If you live just to pass time, you are simply wasting your life.

But if you spend your days meaningfully, you are truly living. You are making proper use of this amazing blessing that is called life. Every new day brings with it many opportunities.

Make the most of life when you can

Abdullah ibn Umar tells of how the Prophet once took him by the shoulders and said: “Live in this world as though you were a wayfarer.”

Of our passage through life Abdullah ibn Umar used to say: “In the evening do not wait for the morning and in the morning do not wait for the evening.

Make the most of your life before you are struck down by illness or death.” (Al-Bukhari).
