Narrow-Mindedness

Maulana Wahiduddin Khan | Soulveda | Aug 11, 2021

According to La Rochefoucauld: “Mediocre spirits generally condemn everything that exceeds their small stature.” Perceiving this common human failing, a modern poet implores people: “Don’t criticise what you can’t understand.”

THE FATE OF THE GREATS

Umar Ibn Khattab, in his capacity as Caliph, was delivering a speech in Medina. One person from the congregation rose and administered him this warning:

“By God, Umar, if we detect any crookedness in you then we will put you straight with our swords.” (Al-Tārīkh al-Kabīr by Al Bukhari, Hadith No. 1825)

LIGHT VERSUS DARKNESS

Maulana Wahiduddin Khan | Soulveda

God made the world according to His scheme and it perfectly corresponds to it. The believers are those who conform to the pattern created by God and the unbelievers are those who do not. Not conforming to His scheme is tantamount to spreading mischief in God’s world. God will soon take them to task, and there will be no escape from His punishment which will be eternal.

THIS WORLD AND THE HEREAFTER

Maulana Wahiduddin Khan | Soulveda

Just as there are two sides to every life in this world, there are two aspects of every act in relation to this world and the Hereafter. One aspect of each act is our acceptance of it, as what it is seen to be in this world. The other aspect is what results from this act, in terms of the Hereafter.

It is because life in this world is intended to be a testing-ground that the world of the Hereafter remains beyond our reach.
