Learn to put up with initial hurt

"When one's ego is touched," an eminent psychologist once observed, "it turns into super-ego, and the result is breakdown." Much the same thing was said some 1300 years back by Umair ibn Habib ibn Hamashah.

During his last days this Companion of the Prophet Muhammad gave some advice to his grandson, Abu Jafar al-Khatmi, part of which was about patience. "One who does not bear with a small hurt from a foolish person will have to bear with great harm," was what he said.

Always be morally responsible

Publius Syrus, a Roman writer of the 1st century BC, who wrote in Latin, is recorded as having said: "A good opportunity is seldom presented and is easily lost." It is a matter of common circumstance that chances to make progress in this world do not present themselves at every juncture. They are few and far between. But most people, failing to realise their special importance, are unable to grasp them in time. Thus, golden opportunities are lost forever, and all that remains is regret.
